Three rules before you buy another multifunction piece

Small dining nook with extendable wood table and two chairs

Rule 1: Time the transform

If a sofa bed takes longer to open than you are willing to spend at midnight, it isn’t a guest solution—it’s décor. Test the motion in-store when possible, not just the mattress.

Rule 2: Count the storage you lose

Murphy beds and sectional sleepers often eat clearance for side tables or lighting. Compare the net floor area after the piece is deployed, not the floor plan in sofa mode alone.

Rule 3: One job must be excellent

A piece that tries to do four things usually does two badly. Pick the primary job—daily sitting, daily work, or occasional guests—and buy for that outcome first.
