The compact living room layout that still feels open
The order of operations
In small living rooms, the common mistake is buying the sofa first. You get a piece you love, then discover it blocks a wardrobe door or kills the pathway to the kitchen.
Instead, sketch three lines: entry, daylight, and media (if you use a TV). Keep at least 80–90 cm clear on primary routes. Everything else hangs off those anchors.
Zoning without walls
Use a rug and lighting to define “conversation” versus “transition.” In tight footprints, a single overhead fixture usually isn’t enough—layer a floor or table lamp so the seating area feels intentional, not leftover.
What to buy last
Accent tables, slim consoles, and poufs are easy to add once the big pieces respect circulation. If you are torn between two sofa depths, choose the one that preserves the walkway—even if the deeper seat looks softer in the shop.
